SCOPI Holds Team Retreat & Field Survey in West Java to Enhance Team Capacity
Bandung, February 9, 2025 – SCOPI (Sustainable Coffee Platform of Indonesia) held a Team Retreat & Field Survey event from February 7-9, 2025. This event was organized to strengthen the capacity of the SCOPI team, which includes the secretariat and the Board of Directors, in addressing field dynamics through direct visits to the coffee-producing regions of Java Preanger in Pangalengan and Puntang, Bandung.
During the Team Retreat, the SCOPI team visited two main coffee farm locations that play a crucial role in the development of sustainable coffee in Indonesia. The visit aimed to gain a deeper understanding of sustainable coffee farm management practices and to identify the needs of key stakeholders, so that the initiatives currently being implemented and those planned by SCOPI can have a positive impact on the national coffee sector.
First Visit: CV. Java Frinsa Agrolestari in Pangalengan
On February 7, 2025, the SCOPI team visited CV. Java Frinsa Agrolestari in Pangalengan, Bandung. The founder of Java Frinsa Agrolestari, Wildan Mustofa, guided the SCOPI team on a tour of the coffee farm and provided in-depth explanations about the coffee cultivation process. Wildan shared various experiments and innovations he had implemented, both in the way he cultivates coffee and in managing the coffee business he runs. Through these experiences, Wildan gained many lessons and best practices that can be further developed by SCOPI in collaboration with other institutions. Additionally, the SCOPI team also visited the coffee processing plant owned by Java Frinsa to discuss and gain a deeper understanding of the coffee processing techniques used there.
Second Visit: Coffee Farm of Koperasi Murbeng Puntang
On February 8, 2025, the activities continued with a visit to the Coffee Farm of the Murbeng Puntang Cooperative, located on Mount Puntang, Bandung. The visit was accompanied by Ayi Sutedja, the Chairman of the Murbeng Puntang Cooperative, who introduced various aspects of cooperative management and the coffee cultivation practices implemented by the cooperative. During the visit, the SCOPI team toured the coffee farm and even had the opportunity to plant coffee seedlings, offering a hands-on experience of the challenges and opportunities in sustainable coffee cultivation.
The discussion with Mr. Ayi revealed several important aspects related to the development of the cooperative's institutional framework and the positive relationship established between the cooperative and educational institutions such as the Politeknik Negeri Lampung (Polinela) and Bina Nusantara University (Binus). One form of collaboration with Binus University is focused on teaching financial literacy to coffee farmer groups, aimed at enhancing their understanding of financial management.
Furthermore, Mr. Ayi shared the local government's "Ngadu Kopi” or Coffee Duels program, which involves the production of green beans for a village-level competition, an initiative promising to improve the quality of local coffee. This program has also raised awareness among farmers about the potential to improve their coffee quality, enabling them to compete at higher levels. The success of this program demonstrates that quality development does not always require large expenses, but can be achieved through strategic steps that strengthen cooperative institutions and enhance the coffee ecosystem, even at the village level.
SCOPI’s Commitment to Supporting Sustainable Coffee
This Team Retreat & Field Survey is part of SCOPI’s ongoing commitment to fostering collaboration among all stakeholders in the Indonesian coffee industry, including farmers, producers, and cooperatives. SCOPI focuses on strengthening the capacity of coffee farmers, improving the quality of Indonesian coffee, and creating an ecosystem that supports environmental sustainability.
As part of these efforts, the event also served as preparation for a study visit by the Coffee Producer Cooperatives from Brazil, scheduled for May 2025, coinciding with the World of Coffee (WoC) event on May 15-17, 2025. SCOPI will facilitate this visit to strengthen ties between Indonesian and Brazilian coffee cooperatives and share best practices in the sustainable coffee industry, which will, in turn, support efforts to enhance the position of Indonesian coffee in the international market.
