SCOPI and ITFC Strengthen Master Trainer Capacity for Sustainable Coffee Cultivation through MTNM & Arabica Upgrading 2024

Karo, North Sumatra, October 15, 2024 – The Sustainable Coffee Platform of Indonesia (SCOPI) and the International Islamic Trade Finance Corporation (ITFC) have reinforced their commitment to enhancing the productivity and quality of Indonesian coffee through the Master Trainer National Meeting (MTNM) & Upgrading Arabica 2024 program. This initiative marks a strategic collaboration between SCOPI and ITFC aimed at advancing the Coffee Master Trainer Upgrade (Coffee MUG) program, with a focus on enhancing the capacity of Coffee Master Trainers (MTs) in implementing sustainable coffee cultivation, particularly in the Central Aceh and Karo Regency areas.

The MTNM & Upgrading event held in Karo Regency, North Sumatra, runs for three days, from October 10 to 12, 2024. It aims to improve the MTs' competencies in sustainable coffee cultivation, equipping them with the tools needed to become high-quality trainers. The event featured 17 MT participants from Aceh, North Sumatra, Jambi, and South Sulawesi, who have undergone a comprehensive series of activities, beginning with Training of Trainer (ToT) on Training Methodology, followed by Coffee Cultivation Competency Certification and Instructor/Trainer Competency Certification, in accordance with the Indonesian National Work Competency Standards (SKKNI).

In his opening remarks, the General Manager of ITFC’s Trade & Business Development Department, Eng. Nasser Al-Thekair, emphasized the importance of this event. He noted that the enhanced MT' competencies will align with the National Professional Standards Agency. This certification will not only benefit the MTs' careers but also support the future success of Indonesia’s coffee industry.

SCOPI Chairperson for 2024-2027, Irvan Helmi, stated, “This meeting represents a significant step forward in strengthening Indonesia's position as one of the world’s top coffee producers, with a sustainable and future-oriented approach. We are looking forward to the tangible benefits and results, and reinforce our commitment to advancing the sustainable coffee industry in Indonesia,” Irvan remarked in his address.

The Agriculture Department of Karo Regency also took part in the event. Representing the acting Head of the Karo Agriculture Office, Hendriawan Girsang, Head of the Plantation Division, delivered a speech and officially opened the event. In his remarks, Girsang noted that coffee cultivation has become increasingly popular among local farmers in Karo Regency in recent years. Given this potential, he expressed hope that today’s activities would help to enhance the capacity of Coffee Master Trainers.

“We hope that the outcome will improve the quality and standards of Arabica coffee through support for farmers and open up extensive business collaboration opportunities between coffee stakeholders and coffee farmers in Indonesia,” Girsang explained.

The MTs will also receive official professional competency certification from the National Professional Certification Agency (BNSP). This certification is essential as it formally acknowledges the MTs’ adherence to national competency standards, ensuring the ongoing sustainability of the coffee farmer support program and maintaining the high standards of farmer training.

Through the Coffee MUG Program, SCOPI and ITFC are committed to developing high-quality Master Trainers who are equipped to assist more coffee farmers across Indonesia, boost Arabica coffee productivity, and, champion sustainable coffee cultivation practices.
