MTNM & Upgrading Robusta 2024: Multi-Stakeholder Collaboration to Produce Competent Coffee Master Trainers
Tanggamus, Lampung, November 1st, 2024 – The Coffee Master Trainer Upgrade (MUG) Program: Indonesia Coffee Export Development is a strategic collaboration between SCOPI and The International Islamic Trade Finance Corporation (ITFC), focusing on enhancing the capacity and competencies of Master Trainers (MT) to promote the adoption of sustainable coffee cultivation and post-harvest practices among farmers. In 2024, the MUG program will implement upgrading sessions for MT as part of the MT National Meeting (MTNM) & Upgrading series. Following a successful event in Karo, North Sumatra for Arabica MT, the MTNM & Upgrading 2024 program is now taking place in Tanggamus, Lampung, from October 28 to November 1, 2024, for Robusta MT.
The MTNM & Upgrading program in Tanggamus is conducted in collaboration with GIZ and Nestlé through the SASCI+ and Coffee++ projects. The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH is an international cooperation agency for sustainable development that works worldwide on behalf of the German government. The Coffee++ project, which is part of SASCI+ and implemented in collaboration with Nestlé, focuses on transforming the livelihoods of small coffee farmers through the adoption of regenerative agricultural practices.
The MTNM & Upgrading activities for Robusta MT include Training of Trainers (ToT) sessions on Coffee Cultivation and Post-Harvest techniques, designed to produce new MT from field staff of SCOPI members and partners. The program also features a ToT on Training Methodology, followed by Coffee Cultivation Competency Certification and Instructor/Trainer Competency Certification, following the Indonesian National Work Competency Standards (SKKNI).
The event includes 35 participants, comprising both prospective and existing MT of Robusta Coffee from Lampung, Lahat, Palu, and West Sumatra. The official opening ceremony was held on October 28, 2024, at Hotel Royal Gisting in Tanggamus. During the opening remarks, the importance of this initiative in building competent MT was highlighted.
General Manager, Trade & Business Development, ITFC, Nasser Al-Thekair, in his speech through online stated that Master Trainers have become the spearhead of ITFC and SCOPI’s efforts to promote sustainable coffee farming practices. “The importance of this activity is to enhance the competencies of MTs in line with the National Professional Standards, which will benefit their careers and support the future success of Indonesia's coffee industry,” explained Nasser.
Secretary of the SCOPI Executive Board 2024-2027, Eman Wisnu Putra, who was also present and gave a speech, further explained the goals of the activity. Eman outlined that, in general, this activity has several key objectives to achieve together: recruiting new MTs, disseminating new knowledge and strategies, enhancing the knowledge and skills of MTs, and conducting the competency certification process. “I believe that this meeting will be a major step in strengthening Indonesia's position as one of the best coffee producers in the world, with a sustainable and forward-looking approach,” added Eman.
Danny Ferry Juddin, Project Manager of SASCI+/Coffee++, emphasized the importance of multi-stakeholder collaboration in the success of this event. Danny expressed, “This activity is a collaboration of many parties, a joint effort to advance coffee in Indonesia. Together, we hope to continue improving the quality, quantity, and sustainability of coffee.”
This event also involved the Lampung Agricultural Training Center (Bapeltan) in the implementation of the ToT on Coffee Cultivation and Post-Harvest. Bambang Haryanto, S.P., M.Si, SCOPI's Grand Master Trainer and Bapeltan Lampung Trainer, delivered a speech on behalf of the Head of Bapeltan Lampung. Bambang mentioned that Lampung is the second-largest coffee-producing region in Indonesia. In the coffee training process, the primary task is to improve productivity, performance, motivation, and job satisfaction. “Training is the core responsibility of Bapeltan as a training institution. We are very grateful to be involved in this activity to carry out our duties. We hope that this training will enhance the participants' skills, knowledge, and attitudes,” explained Bambang.
The opening session of the event concluded with remarks from the Head of the Tanggamus District Plantation Service, drh. Ari Priyanto, who officially opened the event. In his speech, drh. Ari expressed his hopes that, after the implementation of this activity, the master trainers or extension workers, both from Tanggamus and beyond, would be able to provide valuable insights to coffee farmers, ultimately leading to an increase in coffee production in Indonesia. “We thank all parties involved. We hope that after this training, the participants will gain new knowledge and be able to pass it on to the farmers they will train. In turn, this will contribute to improving the quality and quantity of Indonesian coffee,” concluded drh. Ari.
Following this program, prospective MT it is expected to acquire the necessary competencies to train and mentor coffee farmers in their respective regions. Additionally, both prospective MT and existing MT who are recognized as competent by the assessors will receive official professional competence certification from the National Professional Certification Agency (BNSP), which formally recognizes their expertise and ensures the sustainability of the coffee farmer mentoring program.
