SCOPI Strengthens Indonesia’s Sustainable Coffee Commitment at the First-Ever World of Coffee Jakarta

The Sustainable Coffee Platform of Indonesia (SCOPI) is an organization committed to promoting sustainable coffee production and improving the livelihoods of coffee farmers. SCOPI serves as a collaborative platform uniting public and private sectors, along with key stakeholders in Indonesia’s coffee industry, in pursuit of a shared vision for an advanced and sustainable coffee sector.

World of Coffee Jakarta marks the first time this prestigious international coffee event is held in a coffee-producing country, making Indonesia the first Southeast Asian nation to host it. This milestone offers a strategic moment to reinforce Indonesia’s position on the global coffee stage and showcase ongoing sustainability initiatives. Held from May 15–17, 2025, at the Jakarta International Convention Center (JICC), the event welcomed over 30,000 attendees.

SCOPI leveraged this opportunity to broaden its impact and influence by actively participating in the Lecture Series and presenting a collaborative booth alongside various partners. SCOPI’s presence not only reflects its commitment to sustainable coffee practices but also emphasizes the critical importance of cross-sector collaboration in building an inclusive and resilient coffee industry.

As part of the Lecture Series, SCOPI highlighted two crucial issues relevant to the future of Indonesian coffee. The first session, organized in collaboration with Rikolto, focused on the theme “Living Income for Coffee Farmers”. This session addressed the importance of increasing farmers' incomes, ensuring fair value distribution, and fostering inclusive business models in the Indonesian coffee sector. SCOPI used this platform to raise awareness about the need for living incomes for farmers and presented preliminary findings from the Living Income Benchmark study conducted in Indonesia. The session served as a reminder that genuine sustainability must be rooted in the well-being of coffee farmers—the foundation of the industry.

In the second session, SCOPI explored the link between sustainable coffee production and consumption. The discussion underscored the need for shifting consumer behavior to support environmentally friendly and responsible production practices. The collaboration between SCOPI, Rainforest Alliance (RA), and Toko Kopi TUKU demonstrated that sustainability is not only the producer’s responsibility but also a lifestyle choice that consumers must embrace.

In partnership with the Rainforest Alliance and supported by Rikolto and ECOM-IndoCafco, SCOPI featured an educational and interactive collaborative booth. With the central theme of Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP) in the coffee sector, the booth aimed to educate visitors on the importance of sustainable practices in creating better coffee for people and the planet. This joint effort is part of the Accelerating Consumer Transformation and Sustainability in Indonesia (ACT!) project, a consortium initiative led by RA, SCOPI, and Cocoa Sustainability Partnership (CSP) with support from EU SWITCH-Asia. The ACT! project seeks to drive the transformation toward a more equitable, sustainable, and responsible coffee supply chain in Indonesia.

Through its participation in World of Coffee Jakarta, SCOPI reaffirms its commitment to being a catalyst for change in Indonesia’s coffee industry. This event is not just about global recognition—it’s about building a better future for coffee—for farmers, for consumers, and for the environment.
